The 5-Minute Challenge

I regularly push myself to do something a little different from what i usually do. I call these little projects the "5-minute challenge." I have 5 minutes to think of a concept, 5 minutes to put it together, 5 minutes to shoot it, and 5 minutes to edit an image. I sometimes fudge a little on the time constraints, and that's okay by me. As long as i've done something outside of my usual routine, then i'm happy. Here's today's 5-Minute Challenge. It was my first time making fake blood from scratch. (Before and After Edit)

I've had a lot of portrait-chickens in my studio, and Sonya (i'm telling on you!) was one of them. It's perfectly understandable to be a little weary of having portraits made, especially if you've had them done previously by someone who doesn't understand how to light different face shapes. After much prodding and encouragement from a photographer friend, i've decided to go full-force in producing art prints. So far, i'm offering them only on metal, but am looking into a secret crystal-infused paper option.

Here are the first two, which i will soon make available for order on my website. I sold a 24x30 this week via Facebook. I can't get over how amazing these look on sheer matte aluminum. I'll post images of those next week.

People have said to me, "There's no way I could do this type of portrait; I don't have the features," or they "look bad" in photos, etc., etc., etc.

Well, here's proof that ANYONE can be in fantasy portraits (or regular portraits!). I did this photo for an assignment in a photography group. Most members of the group live in places where it snows. My living in the Phoenix Valley forced me to come up with my own "snow" image and so i created The Snow Queen.

I literally pulled my hair up in a pony tail, pulled some loose strands out, sloppily slapped some light foundation on my face, added some light accents to my eyes, and the rest was done in Photoshop.

P.S. i'm completely embarrassed to show the "before" but i really wanted everyone to see that ANYONE can be in fantasy photography.

Can't Afford Custom Photography - Advice

The economy isn't a friendly place these days. I've been following the Occupy movement with awe and admiration for those who take the time to stand up against the 1%. Having had my little guy in the hospital last week with septicemia (blood infection) from a tooth abscess, no dental insurance and a $5,000 deductible on our health insurance, we're now sitting on $8,000 worth of medical and dental bills. (Huge thanks to everyone using us for your photography needs and referring us to others; we would not be eating without you!)

So, i totally get wanting custom photography but not having a spot in the budget to have it. A friend recently found herself in that situation, and so went with a fauxtog (or MWAC-Mom With A Camera) for a couple hundred bucks and a disc of underexposed, grainy photos that left one son off to the side like an afterthought, not to mention the wall peeking out from one side of the backdrop. People, don't do that. Just go to WalMart's studio or Target's or whatever other cheap department store studio you can find. That way, you have a better chance of at least having properly exposed photos, and you'll only be paying $20 for them. Then, save up for nice, custom photography to have done later.

It's rare that i get to actually post my commercial shoots publicly (oftentimes because the client is going to use the images in a copyrighted publication), so it's a nice treat for me when i get to.

Sleepy (yes, that's his real name!) is nearing graduation from the prestigious Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences. I've had the pleasure of watching him work, recording music for the band, Sativa Strain, and will get to work with him while he produces a video. (Man, i LOVE my job!)

Experimenting with High ISO

I had a blast shooting at the Miss Krystle CD Release Party last Saturday night. It was amazing seeing her on stage with Dustyn Marsing (Bent Self). They totally rocked it out!

While shooting the event in a dimly lit bar, i decided to test out my D700's highest ISO setting of 25,600. I didn't expect to see much of an image through all the noise you get when using an extremely high ISO, but was pleasantly surprised.

These images have not been Photoshopped, but i used a miniscule amount of noise reduction in Lightroom. Pretty cool. Go Nikon!

New Location

I have a love/hate relationship with moving. For me, packing boxes is akin to trying to force a cat into a tub of water. I would be the cat. Somehow, though, all our crap made it's way to our new house in Tempe (whooooohoooooo!) and we will start working on our new studio space this weekend. It's been amazing having a month off to get life taken care of (youngest started Kindergarten ::sniffle::), my teens are settled in with their new routines, and we've learned the fastest route to the nearest Costco. Now it's time to get back to photography.

We were in the middle of a heat wave topped with humidity, but we all survived. ;) We decided to go with a bit of a "grunge" theme in addition to the more traditional look; it worked out well!

You may not know this, but i'm a beauty school dropout. After 850 hours in cosmetology school in Chicago, i had a baby (Allie), and never went back. I still cut hair sometimes just for fun. I think it's in my blood; i gave my very first haircut to my best friend, Barbra, in kindergarten. She moved away a few years later (totally unrelated to the haircut, i'm sure) and i didn't see her for over 30 years. I found her on Facebook (there's not much more i love than Facebook) and now here she is, all grown up....

This is my long-time friend, Cathy. We were stationed together in Japan (we were both Russian linguists in the USAF) long ago. She somehow survived being my supervisor (hehe) and we were good friends as well. She's always been one of my favorite people; smart, funny, kind, fun to be around. It was so fantastic seeing her again. We shot in and around Charlottesville and had a blast! She even hung out on spider infested hay...fearless! :)

What's in a Name?

People may think it's a bit odd that we changed our name from Miller&Miller Photography to StudioCentric Photography because "Miller" didn't really sound like us. It is our name, after all. But that's the thing; it's a lot of other peoples' name, too. Soooo, we came up with something like sounds more like us and where we're heading: StudioCentric. It's true that we're planning on focusing more on studio portraits in the very near future, but it's also true that we're a bit eccentric. So, the new name fits. Don't you think? ;o)

Remember these images from over a year ago? Plan on seeing more of this dramatic lighting. It's fantastic for everything from boudoir to seniors.
